The European Commission has announced a major commitment of €700 million to the Global Fund, showing strong support for improving healthcare systems around the world. This funding will go towards the Global Fund’s next cycle from 2027 to 2029, which focuses on fighting three major diseases, HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria. A part of this amount, €185 million, will be released early through the European Union’s current budget.

The Global Fund has been one of the most important organisations in global health since it was created in 2002. It works with countries to provide treatment, improve healthcare access, and save millions of lives.

The European Union, along with its member countries, is one of the biggest supporters of the Global Fund. This new pledge shows that the EU continues to see global health as a shared responsibility, not just a regional issue.

Apart from the main funding, the EU is also investing €46.5 million to improve health cooperation between Europe and Africa. A key focus is on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a growing problem where medicines like antibiotics stop working effectively. This support will help improve monitoring systems, strengthen labs, and encourage better prevention methods across countries.

The EU is also setting aside €50 million for research. This funding will help scientists develop new treatments, especially antibiotics, and find solutions for diseases that are often overlooked. Some of this research will also focus on illnesses like dengue, which are spreading more due to climate change. This funding is part of a larger plan by the European Union to build stronger and more prepared health systems worldwide. The goal is not only to fight current diseases but also to be ready for future health crises.

At a time when global health is under pressure, this pledge sends a clear message, countries must work together, invest consistently, and think ahead. The EU’s €700 million commitment is more than just funding. It is a step towards a safer, healthier future for everyone.
