Directed by filmmaker Alexander Hammer, Room to Move is preparing for its highly anticipated Netflix debut later this month, bringing with it a deeply intimate exploration of identity, artistry, and self-discovery. The documentary first captured attention during its acclaimed premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival and is now set to reach a global audience on May 27 through the streaming platform.

At the heart of the film is celebrated choreographer and performer Jenn Freeman, whose life takes a profound turn after receiving an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis at the age of 33. Rather than presenting a conventional dance documentary, Hammer crafts something far more immersive, a poetic meditation on movement, vulnerability, and the emotional complexity of finally understanding oneself.

A silhouetted dancer bends dramatically against a vivid crimson backdrop, her flowing dress and cascading hair creating a striking portrait of movement, emotion, and elegance.

Freeman’s relationship with dance becomes the emotional language of the film. Through rehearsals, personal reflections, and moments of quiet intensity, Room to Move traces how performance evolves into both an artistic outlet and a means of navigating a world that often feels overwhelming. The documentary delicately captures the tension between public success and private struggle, revealing the layers beneath a career built on discipline and expression.

Hammer, who also appears within the documentary, approaches the story with remarkable intimacy, allowing the visual storytelling to mirror Freeman’s sensory and emotional experiences. Executive producers Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer lend further depth to the project, supporting a narrative that challenges traditional portrayals of neurodivergence on screen.

What emerges is not simply a documentary about dance, but a refined and emotionally resonant portrait of transformation. Room to Move positions itself as a thoughtful exploration of identity, creativity, and the quiet liberation that can come from naming one’s truth for the very first time.
